Mahon’s eyes briefly flicked up and out to take in the snowy barren wilderness. His weary voice was resigned and coarse as he said, ‘Kyal, shut up. Stop bitching. Watch out for Jaba and Houdini, and don’t take your eyes off the light show.’

‘Sorry Sarge. Anything else?’

There was no answer.

The two marines were crouched against an icy promontory, rising gradually from a fractured fissured snowscape. Kyal looked forward, down and out across an open tundra like a vast inland lake, his snub-nosed carbine maser silently seeking targets. Mahon faced back the way they had come, his weapon currently employed to amplify a static-plagued conversation with the base.

Around them nothing moved and the only activity of interest in the dim light remained the distant auroral flashes reflecting off the low cloud. Every so often the shimmering of the coloured sheets was punctuated with a menacing thunder-like rumble.
